It is easy to exchange routes, tracks and points of interest between ViewRanger and other applications. However, it is not possible to share maps between applications.
GPX stands for GPS eXchange. It is a file format used to exchange data between GPS units and mapping software. GPX files typically contain tracks, routes and points.
ViewRanger can import and export GPX files, as can most other popular mapping software. There are also file convertors available to convert to and from GPX.
ViewRanger uses this format because it is an open format, it is not closed and proprietary.
GPX is XML based and is quite easy to edit in a text editor if you need to. See http://www.topografix.com/gpx.asp for more information.

Routes
Do not rule out creating and editing routes in ViewRanger itself, we have a page of route creating and editing advice.
